Location: 162 miles East of Lewiston on Hwy 12 or 87 miles East of Kooskia or 58 miles West of Missoula, MT

Powell is located 13 miles West of Lolo Pass Visitor Center (on the Idaho – Montana border), along the Lochsa River. You can find fuel, food, lodging and visitor information at the Lochsa Lodge and Powell Ranger Station. It is in the area near Powell that members of the Lewis and Clark expedition were suffering the most during the fall of 1805. A sign near the ranger station identifies the Lewis and Clark Expedition's campsite of Sept. 14, 1805, where the party was "compelled to kill a Colt...for the want of meat..."
