Riggins is the gateway to the spectacular mountains, canyons, and rivers of north central Idaho. It is home to some of the best whitewater rafting action anywhere and known as the “Whitewater Capital of Idaho”. From day trips to backcountry wilderness floats via raft or jet boat, Riggins is the perfect access for the Salmon River, the famous River of No Return, and the Snake River in nearby Hell’s Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America. These rivers also offer great fishing for steelhead, salmon, sturgeon, smallmouth bass, and trout. The long steelhead season is a world-class fishery from October thru March.
National forests and wilderness areas surround Riggins. These mountain retreats offer the outdoors person wonderful opportunities for camping, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, and ATV riding. Hikers, backpackers, and horseman can explore the Seven Devils or the Frank Church “River of No Return" Wilderness areas. The Riggins area is a unique mix of wild rivers, pristine streams, high mountain lakes, rugged canyons, alpine meadows, and boundless forests. This is home to a diverse cross section of Rocky Mountain wildlife including big horn sheep, elk, turkey, chukar, black bear, mule deer, and whitetail deer.
Lodging, restaurants, unique gift shops, historical tours and other services are also available. Riggins is host to many annual events that are fun for the whole family such as the annual Riggins Rodeo and Hot Summer Nights. A small town literally on the banks of the Salmon River, Riggins is known for its western hospitality and mild climate. McCall on Payette Lake, the well-known mountain resort and ski town, is an hour drive to the south. A half hour to the north is the historic White Bird Battlefield, and beyond is the Lewis and Clarke trail along Highway 12 leading over Lolo Pass to Missoula, Montana.
