ATV & Motorcycling

Miles of trails and old logging roads entice the ATV enthusiast to ride in North Central Idaho. Both the U. S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management provide maps for ATV-approved trails in their areas. For information on registration and riding tips, visit the Idaho Parks web site. In Idaho, it is not necessary for visitors to register their off-road vehicles unless they will be in the state more than 30 consecutive days.

Communities throughout the region hold ATV Fun Runs in May through September. Check out the calendar of events for dates and see the mud fly!

ATVs and motorcycles are a a great way to take the road less traveled. Best destinations: Elk City/Dixie, Elk River, Grangeville, Orofino, Pierce, Powell, White Bird and Winchester. Here are some trails to get you started:

Clarke Mountain Trail System

23 miles from Pierce Some sections of this 25-mile trail system are steep and winding and, therefore, not for inexperienced riders. ATV and motorcycle riders can choose to do a day-ride or take advantage of the area's campsites.

Deception Cedars Trail System

approximately 40 miles northeast of Pierce Riders will find scenic views of the North Fork Clearwater River on the 28 miles of this trail. With two campgrounds nearby, turn your ride into a weekend trip.

Musselshell Area and Meadows

12 miles south of Pierce and 12 miles east of Weippe The Musselshell area has over 12 miles of trails for ATV and motorcycle riders. With wide trails and gentle grades, this is a great place to bring the family or for beginning riders. Access July to September.

Old Sampson Trail-Potlatch

This ATV trail was once used as a wagon trail in the late 1800s. Cruise through the 4.5 miles of this historic trail all year. It is open to non-motorized traffic, as well, so watch out for hikers.

Scurvy Lookout Route-near Powell

This 5-mile trail is an old fire-access road. It brings riders up to the Scurvy Mountain Lookout, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Access the trail from Forest Road 581.

Riding on Potlatch Lands: Potlatch Corporation owns land with many riding trails. Check out their policy and use fees before planning a trip on their land.

Hiking & Biking

Hit the miles of trails here in North Central Idaho for hiking, mountain biking and road biking. Some trails have historical ties to early explorers, like the Lewis & Clark National Historical Trail and the Clearwater Snake National Recreational Trail are nationally recognized.

If you have a bike, there’s a trail for you in North Central Idaho. Choose from easy paved trails along creeks and rivers to 5,400-foot climbs made for more than a weekend warrior.

North Central Idaho is full of hiking trails. Load your pack for a multi-day adventure in the best of Idaho’s wilderness and backcountry.

Most Idaho trails offer trailhead parking and maps are generally available from the U. S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Take a day hike. Climb to a high alpine lake. Bike a remote mountain trail, deserted back road or a paved path along the river.

Horseback Riding

Turn back the clock to a slower pace of life and discover the rural side of North Central Idaho. Wilderness horseback trips take you deep into the heart of the backcountry to experience spectacular scenery, wildlife, and the very essence of nature. Guest ranches and outfitters offer miles of trails to meander and a chance to sleep under the stars by a campfire.

Whether you’re experienced or a newbie to horses, there’s a trip for you in North Central Idaho. Explore the region the way Lewis and Clark did. Ride the peaks, alongside rivers, and along the historic Lolo Trail.

If you’re looking for an adventurous vacation western style, this is the way to explore the back country and take in the majesty, history and natural wonders of North Central Idaho.

Several outfitters offer combination “saddle and paddle” packages where you can experience the majestic views of the mountains and canyons on horseback and ride the rolling rapids of the Salmon River.
