Nez Perce National Historical Park

Authorized by Congress in 1965, Nez Perce National Historical Park commemorates the culture and heritage of Nez Perce (Niimiipuu) Country.

This unique national park encompasses 24 sites that tell the stories of the native inhabitants of north-central Idaho, as well as the explorers, missionaries, miners, and settlers who followed. Most of these sites are located on the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway and Gold Rush Historic Byway, along and adjacent to the U.S. Highway 12 corridor.

Key park sites include the Heart of the Monster, near Kamiah, and its traditional Nez Perce creation story; the Lewis and Clark Expedition sites of Canoe Camp at Orofino, and Weippe Prairie near Weippe; the flashpoint of the tragic 1877 Nez Perce War at White Bird Battlefield, near White Bird; and the park Visitor Center/Museum 11 miles east of Lewiston on U.S. Highway 95, at Spalding. Stop at the visitor center, open daily year-round, for orientation, and films, exhibits, and ranger-led programs. Park admission is free.

Hours of operation:  9:00 am - 4:00 pm Closed Christmas & New Years Day
